The Pixel Trade is a photographic barter project by Shantanu Starick.
He is in the 23rd month of the project having travelled to five continents trading his services as a photographer for life’s basic necessities.
‘The idea is to reintroduce the bartering system into day-to-day life.
In exchange for my skills as a professional photographer, all I’m asking from my subjects is a roof to sleep under, food to keep the stomach happy and a ticket or ride to the next trade. Shelter, food and transport traded for whatever photography work you need snapped. It’s that simple.’ – Shantanu Starick
Of the 154 trades Shantanu has completed month 14 & 17 he spent some time in Ireland; the projects, people, and spaces captured show Ireland in a very positive light.
It came as no surprise that the resolute and multi talented Fiona Hallinan a.k.a fink was involved in one of the trades.

Fionas Heterodyne project scores roads and other journeys with original site-specific audio compositions. The Heterodyne app is a location-based programme designed to provide an anthology of scores created for locations; a ferry in Istanbul the latest location to receive an original Heterodyne score. Free to download, scores can be streamed within a 30km radius of the places they were created for.
The Pixel Trade is to be approached with caution as it’s nearly impossible to avoid feeling overcome with inspiration when seeing just how well Shantanu Starick has nailed a pretty amazing way of experiencing life for a while.
A little carrier pigeon tells me this global trader, photographer, and uber-doer will be back here in the not so distant future.
