We worked with An Taisce to produce lightweight tote bags from their old blue flags.
The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to 3849 beaches and marinas in 60 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean. This year 56 of these were awarded in Ireland and with this global statistic including the famous beaches of Thailand, the whole of Australia, California and Florida we have something we can be proud about. Each flag made six to eight bags or 30 handles. We produced 96 in total; they were given to the delegates at the FEE General Assembly – Foundation for Environmental Education International. The most well known FEE programmes operated by An Taisce are Green Schools and the Blue Flag programme.
You might want to get involved in An Taisce’s Big Beach Clean on the 15th and 16th September! The Big Beach Clean Weekend is just one of the events that will take place around the world as part of the Ocean Conservancy’s 27th International Coastal Cleanup.
Data collected from all the clean ups taking place internationally will be used by the Ocean Conservancy in their work to guide marine policy and engage people in protecting the ocean and its wildlife for future generations. Hundreds of thousands of volunteers in 97 countries took part in last year’s International Coastal Cleanup. Some of the interesting finds from 2011 include:
- 266,997 Items of clothing (enough to dress every person at the London 2012 Olympics Opening Ceremony!), 195 mobile phones, 139 televisions, 64 umbrellas, 203 bicycles, 155 toilet seats
